Best Air Purifier

Best Air Purifier

Have you ever noticed a warning on your phone’s weather app that the outdoor air quality is particularly poor that day? In those cases, you may think that staying indoors will keep you safe and breathing clean air. Yet, that isn’t always the case. In fact, your indoor air might actually be more polluted than your outdoor air. That’s why so many people are turning to air purifiers to help keep their homes and businesses in good shape. Here is why you might consider getting one, the features you’ll want it to include, and all the factors you never thought about.

Why get one

Our bodies are incredible. Chances are you could be breathing polluted air and not even know it because your lungs can compensate even in a less-than-ideal environment. That said, if you suffer from allergies or asthma, an air purifier can improve your home or work experience significantly. Additionally, if you live in a particularly smoke-filled environment, then a purifier may also help remove fumes that aggravate related conditions.

Next, if you have pets in the house, an air purifier can help to remove dander and odor that they leave behind. You don’t have to go without your furry-friend. Your air purifier will just lessen the impact that they have on your breathing. Finally, just as smoke in your environment may have harmful health impacts, any chemicals being released in or near your home may also be impacting the air quality. Purchasing an air purifier could be just the solution you’re looking for.

Features

  • Type: Select the right air purifier for you by choosing based off of your specific needs. Some air purifiers are better for pet dander and allergens while some are better for chemicals. Decide what you’re looking for before you start shopping.
  • Size: Know your space before you start browsing. Small air purifiers are designed for up to 299 square feet. Medium are for 300 to 699 square feet. Large are for 700 to 1,900 square feet. Then, there are whole-house air purifiers. This is crucial to think about before you invest.
  • Portable: Are you planning on moving your air purifier? Would you like that process to be easy? If you do, make sure you get an air purifier with wheels and a handle. You’ll thank yourself if you’d like your air purifier to go wherever you do!
  • Timer: If you want to save energy or only want your air purifier on at certain times of the day, a timer is crucial to making your air purifier work for your lifestyle.
  • Sensor: An air quality sensor is a great feature for an air purifier because it’ll know exactly when the air quality gets low enough and it should turn on. It takes the guess work out and keeps your home or work space safe.

What else to know

When purchasing an air purifier, you should think about maintenance and upkeep as well. While some individuals don’t mind upkeep, it should absolutely fit into your lifestyle. Just make sure you read up on it as you shop around and keep filter replacements in mind.

5Winix WAC9500 Ultimate Pet True HEPA Air Cleaner

The Winix 9500 was one of the top performers in the air cleaning testing. However, it was held back from a high overall score due to what we felt was an overcomplicated control panel and a hefty weight that made it difficult to move around. If you don’t mind getting used to some finicky controls and don’t plan to be moving your purifier around very much, the Winix is a great choice. However, over their lifetimes the Winix and the Coway AP-1512HH cost about the same, but the Coway weighs less, is easier to use, and offers similar performance.

Great if you don’t plan to move it around much and don’t mind a slight learning curve with the controls

With an estimated lifetime cost of $591, the Winix is about average in terms of long term economy. Most of its cost are up front as the unit lists for $330. After that everything is fairly inexpensive. Annual electricity costs average $5.26. Filters must be replaced once a year and cost only $47.

PROS:
  • Improved technology
  • Feels great
  • Great performance
  • Reduces pet hair and dust
  • Reduces allergy symptoms
  • Quiet on most settings

CONS:
  • Some still claim that PlasmaWave irritate asthma
  • High filter replacement cost

  1. The Rabbit Air is an extremely high-quality product. It’s beautifully designed — I never thought an air purifier could look this good. It also has a lot of different setting for various applications. Everything from high powered to completely silent and we use them all. We have pets, two large dogs, and it really helps our house stay cleaner and have a fresher scent. Love this product and I’d recommend it to anyone.

  2. I have had Alen BreatheSmart FIT50 for over 3 months and can now give an opinion on it. I’m one of the people that has never suffered from allergies when I was younger but as I get older they get more and more noticeable. I had to have my HVAC replaced a few years ago and opted to have an electronic air cleaner installed with it. That was a waste of money. I have since replaced the electronic elements with disposable filters (the 4” thick type that fit perfectly). This was one step up from the electronic cleaner.. I’m still bothered when outside doing lawn work but fine when coming back inside. We have a friend that notices his pet allergies when he comes over (we have a dog), the last time he was over he commented that he wasn’t bothered. I thought the purifier was making a difference but his comment clinched it for me. I have also noticed that as I was doing some remodeling upstairs and would come downstairs the purifier would be running faster with the light violet and when sanding drywall the light would be red with the fan on high, so it definitely works on filtering particulate. I’m sold and might get another for upstairs now.
