GermGuardian air purifiers Review – 2020 Latest Review

Established in 2002, Guardian Technologies have rapidly grown in the air purifier market thanks to their GermGuardian brand to become one of the most popular manufacturers of products which improve indoor air quality.

Offering an air purifier solution to suit every need, the GermGuardian range features HEPA and activated charcoal filters to capture small airborne particles and a signature UV light technology which tackles bacteria and viruses.

There are lots of impurities floating in the air of homes and offices that can impact on our health. Air indoors is often more polluted than that outside. Dust, pollen, smoke, mould, pet dander and odours can put us at risk from a range of ailments, particularly those who suffer from allergies. An air purifier helps create a cleaner, healthier environment and reduces air quality health concerns.

GermGuardian air purifiers are powerful, reliable and efficient and are often less costly than some of the other brands on the market. With such a wide range of units available, it pays to do your research before selecting the model which best suits your needs.

Key features to look for in a GermGuardian air purifier

GermGuardian air purifiers use HEPA filters and activated charcoal filters to clean the air. HEPA filters capture airborne nasties and can pick up particles as small as 0.3 microns which is three times smaller than cigarette smoke. The activated charcoal filter removes larger particles of pollutants.

The Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) is a measure of an air purifier’s capability in dealing with different types of allergen. Put simply, a purifier with a CADR of 250 for dust particles performs as effectively as adding 250 square feet of clean air per hour. Generally, it is advisable to select a model with a CADR rating which is at least two-thirds bigger than the room you will be using it in.

Other factors to look for include the level of noise that the unit emits when in operation, whether the air purifier has a choice of speed settings (so you can lower it when asleep or turn it up when required), how easy the model is to use (some come fitted with a remote control or WiFi connectivity) and other helpful features such as a timer and filter replacement indicator.

Another really useful feature is an air-quality sensor which will automatically turn the machine on when it senses that their quality of air in a room has dropped. Because we can’t see what pollutants are in the environment, an air-quality sensor will keep the room clean throughout the day and night.

Choosing the right GermGuardian air purifier means opting for the one which effectively cleans the air, fits your lifestyle, looks stylish and falls within your price range. You may wish to purchase more than one unit as each room will require its own air purification so this GermGuardian review checks out the best five on the market to inform your buying decision.

GermGuardian AC4825

The GermGuardian AC4825 is the most popular air purifier in the range. With a three-in-one cleaning system, the AC4825 features an activated charcoal filter to kill odours before air passes through the unit’s HEPA filter to catch fine particles like dust, pollen, pet dander and dust mites. A UV light eliminates airborne bacteria and germs.

The AC4825 is an inexpensive option. At 22-inches-tall and weighing in at seven pounds, its slim and lightweight design means the unit it is easy to move around while taking up little space. This air purifier has three speeds and will clean an area of up to 167 square feet which would suit a bedroom, small family room or a medium-sized kitchen. This is a good performing model for those on a budget with a CADR rating for dust of 131.

The GermGuardian AC4825 isn’t going to be suitable for larger rooms. A blinking red light will let you know when the filter needs replacing and you can expect one to typically last about six to eight months. The filters can be a little expensive to buy but they are cheaper than those for the firm’s larger models. The AC4825 does not come with any smart functionality and while it is fairly quiet it can be somewhat noisy on its highest setting.

A Midrange Model with Premium Performance

GermGuardian AC9200WCA

The GermGuardian AC9200WCA packs a lot into its midrange positioning in the market. The AC9200WCA features an eye-catching design and feels like a premium model while not costing the earth.

This model comes with the same cleaning features as the AC4825 including a pre-filter for larger particles and two True HEPA and activated carbon filters as well as a UV light. It will refresh a much larger room of up to 378 square feet. This makes it suitable for most medium-sized living rooms and a room of this size will be fully cleaned in around 15 minutes.

A higher price translates into a bigger unit so the AC4825 weighs a little under 21 pounds but the dimensions of 27 inches in height by 17 inches wide mean the unit is perfectly portable. The white colour scheme means the model will blend in with most homes.

The GermGuardian AC9200WCA boasts a CADR rating of 244 for most pollutants including smoke particles. This range of GermGuardian products comes with an additional ionizer which makes the AC9200WCA even more powerful in combating allergens. This function can be turned on or off as needed.

This particular model does not come with any additional features such as smart capability but it does have a timer. The AC9200WCA features a larger GermGuardian ‘H’ filter which retails at a higher price than the company’s smaller models but the cost is comparable with similar size options from its competitors.

Smart Features air purifier

Added Smart Features in a Smaller Unit

GermGuardian CDAP5500BCA

The CDAP5500BCA brings together GermGuardian’s three-in-one cleaning power and adds smart capability and an air quality monitor. This air purifier will clean a room of 167 square feet in size and has five speed modes and a useful auto feature which will optimise air quality with optimal energy consumption. The CDAP5500BCA is also available in white - just switch the “B” for a “W” in the product code.

This unit is 28 inches in height and has a minimalist control panel on top displaying the current status. The front of the CDAP5500BCA features a circular LED indicator to indicate the current air quality in the room - a feature GermGuardian term as their Smart Air Quality Monitor (AQM).

With support for Alexa or Google Assistant, the CDAP5500BCA can be turned on or off and have the fan speed adjusted via voice control. There is an accompanying GermGuardian app which will link to the unit via Bluetooth.

The CDAP5500BCA does lack some extra features of higher-priced air purifiers such as a scheduling option but the company do market this one as a single-room cleaner so that may not be essential for the purposes that the CDAP5500BCA will most likely be used for.

Whilst the air change rate of the CDAP5500BCA can’t match the most expensive air purifiers on the market, and the CADR is a modest 108 for smoke particles, its performance is solid enough to notice a swift improvement in air quality when in operation.

Kids Room air purifier

Kids Room Edition

GermGuardian AC4150

The GermGuardian AC4150 is a compact 11-inch air purifier specifically designed for a children’s bedroom. This kids’ edition comes in pink or blue and features a cool night time projector which has three modes to drift the little ones off to sleep - Under the Sea, Sleepy Safari or Twinkle Moon and Stars.

The projector is pretty unique in the air purifier market and is easy to use. Its beam can’t be angled though meaning you would need to position the unit close to your child’s bed for them to be able to gaze straight up at it.

Aside from the children’s features, the AC4150 comes with all of GermGuardian’s cleaning options - HEPA filter, activated charcoal filter and a UV light. The unit weighs just 5.4 pounds and is one of the lightest on the market making it ideal for a kids room. Because of its small size, the GermGuardian AC4150 has a combined filter to save space inside.

This model is designed to clean a small space below 100 square feet so expectations on performance need to be realistic. The highest setting can be a little noisy meaning you will have to turn it down to slow or medium for those times when the children are sleeping. Overall, this is a great option for a kid’s room, particularly when you think of all the things children get up to! It’s also ideal for removing the smells of dirty nappies and mucky clothes.
